Phoenix trip part 5

January 4 , 2007 - Nogales/ Las Vegas/ Death Valley/ Lake Tahoe/ San Fran

We're in San Fran right now at some deli with free internet; been driving since tuesday. After going to Mexico (Nogales) for the day with some peeps on monday, after the conference, we rented a civic hybrid , in Phoenix, and headed up to Las Vegas for a night on the town... no not really... for cheap accomodations and a walk to see the sites.

nice shot Will

you'd swear this was Venice

the humble Hilton (8.2mb) walking the streets (9.8mb) the Stratosphere (5.7mb) neat pressure pad (5.1mb)

55$ per night view

according to the gps...area51..?

The next day we drove it up to Lake Tahoe, stopping first in Death Valley for some flips off the sand dunes (4.7mb vid), and then by Yosetime np, but it was closed. There's no pics this time as i forgot my camera in Phoenix. So Will bought a new one in Las Vegas, but he got some sand in it in Death Valley, so it doesn't work anymore (edit: pics later salvaged from his camera). We're down to a cheap disposable camera

??...closest thing..a pyramid?

entering the valley of death..

Will and i seem to get along pretty good, although we have a different idea as to what represents a good outing and night. To him a good time is to hike up some snowy mountain in the middle of nowhere, at night, and tent it out. My idea of a good night is a hot shower and a warm bed. So far the hot showers and warm beds are prevailing.

So we got caught in another blizzard this morning at lake tahoe, so we had to buy some tire chains to get out of there, and drove down through sacramento and here we are in san fran. 'bout to look at the ocean and then drive over the bridge, hopefully take in an earthquake, then head south down highway 1 to LA then San Diego, and back to Phoenix.

Update: San Diego didn't happen, but we made some stops at some nice spots like Monterey, Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, etc. We spent our last road trip day in LA with a good family who treated us really good, good bunch. I understood they like to take their guests shooting at the range, but the girls all had to go to some bridal shower instead for some reason. So we spent the better part of the day hiking in the hills above the city with 'dad' and 'uncle.' They treated us to some some good burgs and good fries before we ripped back to Phoenix, to hand in our rental keys a good hour late.

Good trip, overall, just under 2000 miles in 5 days (and about 40mpg to boot). I'm glad we did the road trip instead of the other idea - wandering across Mexico with only our backpacks, 60$ each, 4 bottles of water, and not 10 words of Spanish between the two of us.
